Abstract: The problem of when to optimally harvest trees when timber prices evolve according to an exogenous stochastic process has been studied extensively in recent decades. However, little attention has been given to the appropriate form of the stochastic process for timber prices, despite the fact that the choice of a process has important effects on optimal harvesting decisions. We develop a simple theoretical model of a timber market and show that there exists a rational expectations equilibrium in which prices evolve according to a stationary ARMA(1,1) process. Simulations are used to analyze a model with a more general representation of timber stock dynamics and to demonstrate that the unconditional distribution for rational timber prices is asymmetric. Implications for the optimal harvesting literature are: 1) market efficiency provides little justification for random walk prices, 2) unit root tests, used to analyze the informational efficiency of timber markets, do not distinguish between efficient and inefficient markets, and 3) failure to recognize asymmetric disturbances in time-series analyses of historical timber prices can lead to sub-optimal harvesting rules.

A game theory approach to the Iranian forest industry raw material market

Dynamic game theory is applied to analyze the timber market in northern Iran as a duopsony. The Nash equilibrium and the dynamic properties of the system based on marginal adjustments are determined. When timber is sold, the different mills use mixed strategies to give sealed bids. It is found that the decision probability combination of the different mills follow a special form of attractor an...

Valuing Perfect Knowledge in Timber Management

Timber stumpage prices exhibit considerable volatility, which has a tremendous effect on the long-term returns associated with growing timber. Predicting trends in the market occupies a great deal of effort in forest economics research and practice. But what are the possible gains from having the ability to predict the future of timber stumpage markets? On the stand-level, forward-recursive dyn...

A Dynamic Analysis of Market Efficiency on Benchmark Crude oil markets: Based on the Adaptive Market Hypothesis

This paper examines the applicability of the adaptive market hypothesis (AMH) as an evolutionary alternative to the efficient market hypothesis (EMH) by studying daily returns on the three benchmark crude oils. The data coverage of daily returns is from January 2th 2003 to March 5th 2018. In this paper, two different tests in the form of two distinguished classes (linear and nonlinear) have bee...

A Global Model of Climate Change Impacts on Timber Markets

Several papers have now estimated the impact of climate change on national timber markets, but few studies have measured impacts globally. Further, the literature on impacts has focused heavily on changes in productivity and has not integrated movements of biomes as well. Here, a dynamic model of ecological change and economic change is developed to capture the impact of climate change on world...

Integrating Timber Price Scenario Modeling with Tactical Management Planning of Private Forestry at Forest Holding Level

In forest management planning, deterministic timber prices are typically assumed. However, real-life timber prices vary in the course of time, and also price peaks, i.e. exceptionally high timber prices, might occur. If land-owners can utilise the price variation by selling timber with the high prices, they are able to increase their net revenues correspondingly. In this study, an approach is p...
